Covid triggering diabetes in recovering patients

Image
Is Covid triggering diabetes in recovering patients? While doctors have been saying that diabetes complications including death among patients with Covid-19, they are now finding that an increasing number of patients discharged from Covid-19 wards have elevated levels of blood sugar: On most occasions, they may require medication with tablets or even insulin for at least a short period of time. Why diabetes? While research is under way on what triggers diabetes post recovery from the viral infection, senior diabetologist Dr R M Anjana from the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation points to three different reasons. It is possible that many of these patients had diabetes before they had Covid infection, but they weren't aware. The HbAlc test gives the aver- age level of blood sugar over a period of three months. "If...

Why Did You Choose To Say "No"?

Image
Why Did You Choose To Say "No"?  We can all choose to say 'no', to things; a slice of cake, cup of tea, date, or job offer. We have the option to go or not go, accept or not accept. On the face of it anyway. For some saying 'no', is their automatic default. They may be busy, stressed, overworked, overwhelmed, and are desperate to avoid taking on any more, determined not to add to their burden. Or they may lack confidence and not want to be seen to be struggling or failing in another person's eyes. Then there are those who always say 'yes'. They may not want to miss out, are always keen to be involved, to know what's going on, and have their hands on the reins. They don't want to hurt, disappoint or let others down and like to see everyone pleased and happy. The optimum level is probably somewhere in-between, where we say 'yes', enough times to stretch and challenge ourselves, try new things, make new contacts and get out of ...

Anticipating The Future Without Fear

Image
Anticipating The Future Without Fear Many of us spend a lot of our time acting out of fear of the past or the present, and in doing that, we affect each other and the larger society. We create a culture of fear. When fear comes up and we’re upset and worried, the first thing we need to do is acknowledge that fear. We can recognize and embrace it rather than act it out. Our original fear isn’t just from our own birth and childhood; the fear we feel comes from both our own and our ancestors’ original fear. Our ancestors suffered from hunger and other dangers, and there were moments when they were extremely anxious. That kind of fear has been transmitted to us; every one of us has that fear inside. And because we suffer from that fear, we make the situation worse. We worry about our safety, our job, and our family. We worry about external threats. Even when nothing bad is happening, that doesn’t prevent us from feeling fear. However, we can prepare for the future without gettin...

Help For Children Who Are Depressed Are you the parent of a child who is often depressed? Are you a child who often feels down in the dumps and depressed? This article offers advice for both parents, other family members, and children about how to deal with, reduce and even eradicate this depression. I remember from my own childhood having many periods when I was very unhappy and sad. I was the type of person who would let aspects of my life get on top of me which would at times affect my sleep patterns. I found growing up through childhood, into a teenager, and ultimately into my adulthood as one big choir and struggle. I was forever comparing my own life to that of my brother, sister, and friends. Their lives seemed so much easier than mine was and this made me feel quite jealous of them. Looking back one of my faults was that I was not willing to discuss my worries and fears with my parents and basically kept them bottled up inside of me. This meant of course that I had to ...
